Albanian Ten-mayor Delegation Confirmed the Presence at the 2010 Global Mayors Forum
 


Recently, the Global Mayors Forum (GMF) Secretariat received the Registration Form from Albanian Association of Communes (AAC), one of the largest and the most influential urban organizations in Albania. The AAC confirmed the presence at the 2010 Global Mayors Forum by a ten-member Delegation, among which are eight incumbent mayors.

Albania is a country in South-Eastern Europe, bordered by Montenegro to the northwest, Kosovo to the northeast, Macedonia to the east and Greece to the southeast. In the heart of the Mediterranean, on the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, Albania is fast becoming one of the world's most interesting getaways. The Albanian capital, Tirana, is home to approximately 895,000 of the country's 3.64 million people, and it is also the financial capital of the country. Albania has abundant Natural Resources. Chromium, ferro-nickel, copper, coal, oil and gas are among the most important sub-soil minerals found in Albania. Over the last five years, Albania’s macroeconomic growth has averaged around 5%.

 

Albanian Association of Communes (AAC) is a non profit organization established in 1997. Its Members are the commune mayors, representing the communes. It has a constituency of 308 members, who make up 82% of first-level units of local government in Albania and cover over 55% of the population.

 

Mr. Aleksander LALA, Chairman of AAC and Mr. Agron Haxhimali, Executive Director of AAC are among the 10 members of the Delegation. Other members are mayors from the eight Albanian Municipalities and Communes including Orosh, Petrele, Bushat, Shenkoll, Fark Commune, Mollaj Commune, Dajt Commune and Synej Commune.

 

“We are trying to formulate something for the event. Also we can do a presentation with regard to the local government decentralization process, role of local government in the economic development, the challenges of the partnerships and cooperation with different countries in the spirit of globalization,” said Mr. Agron Haxhimali, Executive Director of AAC.
